Buying a pot that is too small chokes the roots. Buying one that is too big keeps the soil wet for days and can rot them. This pot size guide explains how pot sizes are measured and which size suits which plant, so you get it right the first time.

How pot size is measured

In India, pots are usually sold by the top width (diameter) in inches, measured across the rim. A 12 inch pot is about 30 cm wide at the top. Height matters too: tall pots suit tall plants with deep roots, and wide, shallow pots suit spreading plants.

The simple rule for repotting

When you move a plant to a new pot, choose one that is 2 to 4 inches wider than its current pot. For a nursery plant in a plastic bag, pick a pot slightly wider and deeper than the bag.

Signs your plant needs a bigger pot

  • Roots are coming out of the drainage hole.
  • Water runs straight through and the soil dries within a day.
  • The plant stops growing in its growing season, or keeps tipping over.
  • Roots circle tightly around the inside of the pot when you lift the plant out.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Jumping to a huge pot: extra soil holds extra water and the roots stay soggy. Soggy soil is the main cause of root rot. Go up one size at a time.
  • No drainage hole: every pot needs a way for extra water to escape. Keep a tray under it to protect the floor.
  • Ignoring height: a tall snake plant in a short, wide pot can fall over. Use a tall tower planter for tall plants.

Find the right pot

For small plants, start with the Dura 10 inch round pot. For floor plants, try the 14 inch or 16 inch planters. For big plants and small trees, see our roto planters. Still unsure? Send a photo of your plant on WhatsApp and we will suggest a size.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bigger pot always better?

No. A pot that is much bigger than the root ball holds extra wet soil that the roots cannot use, and the plant can rot. Go up only 2 to 4 inches at a time.

How often should I repot a plant?

Most indoor plants need a bigger pot every one to two years, and fast growers like money plant every year. In Delhi, the easiest times are spring (February to March) and after the monsoon (September to October), when it is neither too hot nor too cold.

Do plastic pots get too hot in Delhi summers?

Light colours like white and beige heat up less than dark ones. In May and June, move pots out of harsh afternoon sun if you can and water a little more often.
